How to Tell People What You Doand Be Remembered

How to Tell People What You Doand Be RememberedHow to Tell People What You Do- and Be RememberedWhen youre introducing yourself to new colleagues or potential employers, either in writing or face-to-face, people rarely remember the microscopic details of what, exactly, you do.But they will always remember how you made them feel.True story I was buckled into the backseat of cab, catapulting through the Flatiron district of Manhattan. The driver peered at me through the rearview mirror and popped the inevitable questionSo, what do you do?Normally, I introduce myself as a communication specialist. Sometimes, I say Im a creative copywriter. Other times, I say Im a writing instructor. But on that particular morning, I was feeling a bit jazzier than usual. (NYC does that to me.)Without over-thinking, I blurted outI write about how to be a better writer. Which really means I write about being understood. Which really means I write about love. The cab drivers eyes widened at the word love. He smiled. That sounds like a very good job.It is, I said. Its the best.He dropped me off and I scampered into the business workshop Id been invited to attend. One by one, each woman in the room stood up and introduced herself. When it was my turn, I whipped out my brand-new introduction and took it for another test driveI write about how to be a better writer. Which really means I write about being understood. Which really means I write about love.Dead silence. Then smiles, all around. One woman?a fellow writer, like me?laughed and saidUm, yeah. What I do? Its what she said.Nobody in the room knew exactly what I did, or exactly what kinds of clients and companies I serve, or exactly how I structure my services, or any of the essential details that were supposed to pin down in our job descriptions. But I made them feel something. And it worked.About half the women in the room approached me that weekend, requesting my business card. Several asked if I was accepting new clients. A few fol lowed up later to sign up for my writing workshops. The event organizers were so impressed, they offered to pay me to coach their clients on crafting their messages and introductions for next years program.Impact. Results. Boom. All because I brought some emotion into the room. Now, its Your TurnUse this fill-in-the-blank schablone to write a new So, what do you do? introduction for yourself. And this time, with feelingIm a insert your job title.Officially, my job is to insert your clear-cut job description, e.g., seek out publicity opportunities for my company / write grant proposals / coordinate our annual healthcare conference for 5,000 people. But really? I insert your emotional job description, e.g., make A-list celebrities fall in love with our mission / help create miracles for underprivileged kids who still believe in magic / create the party of the year, where hardworking nurses get to kick up their heels and go buck-wild.To sum it all up The key to writing a job description that people will actually read, listen to, and remember is using phrases likeBut reallyWhich really meansBasically? Its all aboutWhich is a fancy way of sayingto get straight to the emotional core of what you do, and why.The people youre connecting with will probably bounce back with a few questions. They may need a bit of clarification. They might request a simple run-down of your skills and credentials. But one things for sureYoull spark a new feeling. And you wont be forgotten.Photo of women meeting courtesy of Shutterstock.

Money Moves for the Job-Seeker

Money Moves for the Job-SeekerMoney Moves for the Job-SeekerNow that taxes have been filed, its time to kick back and still think about money. As a jobseeker, whether employed or unemployed, you need to think about money because it affects the timing of your search, the sectors you want to target, and the way you position yourself. I coached someone who wanted to change careers from financial services to pastry making and then seemed startled when I pointed out that entry pastry chef jobs paid minimum wage. That wasnt to discourage her from the transition, but she needed to know how to meet that income eu-agrarpolitik if she decides to do so. Wanting to make more isnt going to change what the market will bear or how much you happened to have saved. So take stock of your cash position and plan for the future. Then you will know how long you have for your search (and whether you need to take interim work in the meantime), how aggressively you need to search, and the range of choices yo u have that meet your current obligations (or whether you want to change your obligations to expand your choices). Plan for the upcoming ad hoc expenses now. Mark your calendars one month before major expenses are due (e.g., insurance payment, home maintenance contracts) so you have a visual reminder to get the money in time. If you know that August is when you take vacation, plan for that September credit card bill.Outline specifically where you will get the money for bills due immediately. Will you decrease restaurant dining or cut the vacation out? Can you work overtime or get freelance work to earn more?Start your tax paperwork for next year. platzset up an accordion file now that has categories for the receipts you will need for 2010 tax time charity, child care, investments, meals, any expenses that may be tax-deductible. As you get receipts, just file them by category. You can add new categories as needed, but this way, you do a little at a time.Protect your identity. Everyon e is entitled to a free annual credit report. There are three agencies that give reports. By staggering your requests, you can get a free report from a different agency every four months. More employers are checking credit as part of the background check process, so you want to know what your report says about you and have the chance to fix any errors. Visitannualcreditreport.com to order your first one now. Then mark your calendar four months and eight months from now to get your other two. Repeat for next year and beyond.Caroline Ceniza-Levine is co-founder of SixFigureStart (www.sixfigurestart.com).

Primetime Television Audience Viewing Pattern Changes

Primetime Television Audience Viewing Pattern Changes Primetime Television Audience Viewing Pattern Changes Primetime television refers to the block of time when audience viewership peaks for programming during a defined period of time. In the United States, it is traditionally 8:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time in the evening, when most people are home from work and catching up with the news or their favorite shows.   A Shift in Audience Patterns While the traditional 8-11:00 p.m. block is considered prime time, modern audiences have begun to shift away from the schedules of previous audiences. During Mondays through Fridays, Americans tune in the most between 9:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Viewership is lowest at the end of the prime time slot, around 10:45-11:00 p.m. Men and women tend to have the same viewership patterns, but age plays a large factor in timing. Viewers 18-49 tend to tune in during the latter part of prime time, while viewers over 49 usually tune in earlier.   Primetime Programs and Advertising Television stations run only their most successful, or most likely to be successful, programs during prime time. Late-night talk shows, dramas, and reality television programs tend to do very well in these slots.   Because of the higher rates in viewership during the prime time block, it is the most in-demand spot for advertisers as well. The cost to run a commercial during prime time is several times more expensive than non-peak hours, such as mid-morning.   Shows have short windows of opportunity to prove themselves. Because the time slot is so valuable, networks cannot afford to have a show during prime time that does not encourage viewers. If a show begins to slide or never connects with audiences compared to its competition, it will be promptly canceled and replaced with another program.   Changes in Primetime With Technology In recent years, prime time has seen some distinct changes due to technology. Services like Netflix and Hulu have changed how people watch television. Instead of waiting for the next episode of their favorite show on a certain day of the week, people instead now binge-watch entire seasons in one sitting.   People used to make plans around their favorite shows. If they missed their favorite prime time program, they had to hope for a rerun. Now, people can watch shows whenever they like and catch up on episodes they miss. This has made it more difficult to track audience viewership and attract advertisers. Networks are trying to catch up and change their business models by expanding how they run prime time shows.   By offering popular shows via on-demand service, networks can still include commercials and limit people from fast forwarding. This is an attractive option  for advertisers, as they then have a guaranteed audience.   They also are turning to product placement in shows more often, rather than commercials, to replace the income they lose from a lack of commercials. By featuring products as part of the show, they can feature advertisers discretely.   Primetime is an essential time slot for both networks and advertisers. Its where advertisers want to place their products and where networks make most of their income.  However, tracking viewership remains difficult, and primetime programming is increasingly turning to of-the-moment shows, such as reality television, to attract audiences in real time.

Anxiously Waiting for the Job Offer - How to Stay Calm

Anxiously Waiting for the Job Offer - How to Stay Calm Anxiously Waiting for the Job Offer - How to Stay Calm When you leave a   job interview, you usually- not always- know how it went. Sometimes you are confident you did well, but other times you are well aware your performance could have been better. Until the employer gets back to you with a job offer or rejection, you wont know for sure. Until then, you will be in limbo, wondering whether you will have to continue searching for work or getting ready to start a new job. What can you do while anxiously waiting for a job offer?  If you are currently employed, dont do anything that could alert your boss you might be leaving soon. Until you accept an offer from another employer, you shouldnt let on that you are going to  quit your job. Go to work every day  and do your job well. Take on new projects. You can always transfer them over to a colleague if you leave. While you may be  sure you are going to get an offer any day, you cant be entirely  certain until you have one in hand. Unless your bank account can handle it, it is prudent to keep those paychecks coming in while you search for a new job. Prepare to respond to a job offer if you get one. Immediately following the interview, you may be quite sure you will accept, but to help avoid problems later on, make sure to consider an offer carefully. If you dont already know how to do it, learn what steps you should take to  negotiate salary.  Find out what the typical salaries are in your field. Be sure to consider your level of experience and education, as well as your geographic area.Do some more  research about the employer. Hopefully, you learned about the organization  before your interview, but you can  always get more information. Keep up with the  latest news  about the company and the industry in general. This information will help you decide whether to take the job if you get an offer. You may even learn something that will change your mind about the organization and turn down the offer instead. Contact the prospective employer one week after your interview unless the interviewer told you when a hiring decision would be announced. In that case, get in touch no sooner than a week after that date. Contact them using the method by which you communicated before the interview. Dont make multiple attempts to email or phone your contact person. Once is enough.Continue your job search  campaign until you get an offer. If you dont get this job, you will eventually get another, but not if you pause your search every time you have a promising interview. Whenever you stop looking for work, you risk losing momentum. If you have other interviews lined up, dont postpone them. Continue to network. Try to keep your anxiety in check. It is difficult  to stay calm while it feels like your career is in limbo, but try to do it anyway. One way to do that is to keep  busy. The more you have to do, the less you will be able to think about whether or not you got a job offer. Focusing on your current job or your search for a new one will, for the most part, keep you occupied. While being busy will keep your mind off waiting for a job offer, you should also take time to  relax. If you are working, try not to stay late every night. If you are job searching, dont do it 24/7. Whether you relax by exercising, going to a movie, reading a book, or binge-watching your favorite television show, find time for it. If you are unemployed, make sure to get out of the house every day. Tend to your job search from the library or a coffee shop with free wifi. Go for a walk and dont bring your phone with you. If the prospective employer tries to call, they will leave a voicemail. Check your messages before the end of the business day so that you dont have to wait overnight before you can return them.

Weightlifting less than an hour per week could increase your longevity

Weightlifting less than an hour per week could increase your longevity Weightlifting less than an hour per week could increase your longevity Resistance training (weightlifting, bench-pressing, etc.) typically gets a lot less attention than  aerobic exercise. While doctors frequently tout the latter for its health benefits, far less is known about the effects of resistance training, until now. A team of researchers, lead by D.C. (Duck-chul) Lee, Ph.D., an associate professor of kinesiology at Iowa State University, conducted a study of nearly 13,000 adults over a 10 year period and  found  that strength training or weightlifting for less than an hour a week results in a 40 to 70 percent reduced risk of  heart attack  and  stroke. And that’s not all - the research shows that resistance trainers reaped a 29 percent lower risk of metabolic syndrome (people suffering from high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, and excess fat around the waist) and a 32 percent lower threat of hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol), both of which are associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. In an interview with Thrive Global, Lee explains what constitutes resistance training: “Anything you can imagine in the gym: free weights, such as dumbbells and barbells, and machines built for chest and leg presses, leg extensions, as well as lat pulldown machines.” Although  prior research  by Lee indicates that people who have gym memberships are more inclined to workout, he assures us that incorporating unconventional forms of weightlifting into our daily lives can be a suitable substitute: “Muscle-strengthening activities like digging, carrying heavy shopping bags, pushing a heavy lawnmower, carrying your chubby toddler, anything that increases your muscle activities, could provide the same rewards,” he says. The benefits hold whether or not participants also did cardio workouts. “Additionally, we controlled for smoking, alcohol consumption, body weight, age, gender, and several other factors, but the results remained the same,” he says. The most surprising takeaway from the study, in Lee’s view, is that those who spend several hours a week pumping iron didn’t receive much greater advantages than those who spent considerably less time doing so. While we may not achieve muscular or chiseled physiques by strength-training for less than an hour a week, “working out more hours per week did not provide any additional  health  rewards,” he says. Should I Apply for the Job 6 Questions to Ask Before Submitting Your Resume

Should I Apply for the Job 6 Questions to Ask Before Submitting Your Resume Should I Apply for the Job 6 Questions to Ask Before Submitting Your Resume Writing customized resumes and cover letters is time-consuming and downright exhausting. Before wasting your time and effort applying for hundreds of jobs, make your job search more efficient by asking yourself the following questions. Do I fit the job description? How often have you applied for a job thinking, “Well, I can do some or most of these things. Might as well give it a shot?” While this is admirable, you are wasting your time. Certain abilities are listed on a job description for a reason. Spoiler alert: they want to hire an individual with those skills! If you lack key qualifications when you submit your resume through an applicant tracking system, it could be pushed aside without the hiring manager even seeing it. If the job description requires experience you don’t have, spend your time on other applications. Your resume may also get thrown out if you are overqualified for a position. Companies are wary of you as an overqualified candidate because they worry about you getting bored or moving on to a more appropriate opportunity. And, frankly, you probably would get bored. An honest assessment of your abilities will help you quickly filter out potential jobs, saving time and getting you one step closer to a new job that is within reach and worthy of your skills. Will this job help me reach my goals? When you are looking for a job, you want to find one that will do more than just supply a paycheck every month. You want a job that will help push you towards your ideal career. Challenge and stretch yourself. When you are looking through job descriptions, ask yourself if this job will help you hone the skills you need for your dream job. Will you be able to grow and move up within the company? Your career goals may also revolve around your family and lifestyle. You may prioritize a job that offers flexibility and allows you to spend quality time with your family. Or one that provides stability and protects them. If this is a part of your goals, you probably don’t want a job that is all consuming or one that lacks security. Determine your goals and find a job that will help you reach them. Would I fit in at this company? Every company has a distinct and unique culture. Some personalities will thrive in one job but not another. When you find a job that you are interested in, delve deeper into the company culture. Look at their company website, visit their social media pages, and look up employee reviews on Glassdoor. What do their current and past employees say about them? From what you read, does it seem like this is an environment in which you can thrive and grow? Do your research on company values. What is their mission statement? Does it align with what you believe? Do the company’s values match your own? If so, then this might be the right job to apply for. Do I have networking capabilities? It is no secret that networking is one of the best ways to get a job. You are far more likely to get an interview and land that job if you have an employee reference to go along with your resume. In fact, many surveys find that between 70 and 85% of job openings are filled through networking. As you begin your job search, look into companies where you have a connection who would be willing to put in a good word for you. Utilize LinkedIn and other social media networks to build relationships and help advance your career. Knowing an individual within the company can also come in handy when finding out about the company’s culture. You can ask them what they like and what they dislike about working at their job. This is a great way to find out if a job is right for you. Do I stand out enough to get the job? Sometimes it is hard to showcase ourselves because we don’t want to come off as prideful or annoying. When it comes to applying for a job, this mindset could hurt you. Hiring managers look at hundreds of resumes when filling a position. If you don’t stand out you will just be one of many thrown to the side. Take one more look at the job description and determine which requirements you possess that will stand out amongst the rest. Highlight these skills in your resume and cover letter. Don’t be afraid to put all your abilities on display for everyone to see. Would I hire myself for this position? It can be hard to identify your own strengths and weaknesses. Try to look at yourself through the eyes of a hiring manager. Would you hire yourself? Why or why not? This is a great way to identify which jobs you have a very real chance of getting. If you aren’t sure about your strengths and weaknesses, turn to your friends and family. A third party can give you a fresh perspective on your skillset. Should I apply for the job? Sometimes the thought of job hunting makes you want to curl up in a ball, so don’t waste your time and effort applying for jobs youre unlikely to get or jobs you don’t even want. Asking yourself these questions before taking the time to apply for a job will help you understand exactly what it is you want from a job or possible career. This understanding will help you find the right job quickly and efficiently. About Micaiah: Micaiah is a writer for the Built for Teams blog. Become an ATF Special Agent

Become an ATF Special Agent Become an ATF Special Agent The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives has a long history of service within the United States. Originally established as a regulatory and revenue enforcement agency to collect taxes and tariffs on intoxicating beverages and tobacco products, the ATF has grown into one of the most important law enforcement organizations within the United States Federal Government. Its also become a popular career choice for individuals looking for jobs in criminal justice and criminology, leading many to wonder just how to become an ATF agent. Federal law enforcement jobs in general, and special agent careers in particular, often come with higher relative pay and excellent health and retirement benefits. Because of this, ATF agent careers and other federal jobs are highly sought after and highly competitive. That means there will be a lot of hoops to jump through to get hired. It also means youll have to work hard both academically and physically to make sure youre the best candidate for the job. Minimum Requirements for ATF Agents Before you even apply for a job as an ATF agent, youll want to make sure you meet the minimum requirements. These are the bare minimum qualifications you need to have just to be considered. If you dont meet the minimum requirements, your application wont get a second look. To be considered for a job as an ATF agent you must, at a minimum: Be a U.S. citizenBe between 21 and 37 years old (some exceptions to the maximum age are granted for military veterans, current federal law enforcement officers, and other federal employees)Hold a valid driver licenseHold either a four-year degree from an accredited institution, three years of relevant professional work experience - such as working as a police detective - or a combination of education and work experience.Be ready and willing to work nearly anywhere. Remember, those are just the minimum requirements. Just because you meet them in no way guarantees you will get hired, or even advance in the hiring process. There are several steps youll have to take. Meeting the minimums simply gets your foot in the door and a chance to participate in the testing and evaluation process. From here, if you have the credentials, youll progress to the ATF special agent applicant questionnaire, the special agent exam, the pre-employment physical task test, and a polygraph exam and thorough background investigation. ATF Special Agent Applicant Questionnaire One of the first tasks youll have to perform when you apply is complete the ATF Special Agent Applicant Questionnaire. It is a comprehensive supplemental application that provides the foundation for the pending background check. The questionnaire will ask about past drug use, criminal history, previous employers, and addresses, as well as other information relevant to your character and past performance. ATF Special Agent Exam The ATF employs a basic abilities test to ensure its applicants possess the skills and mental ability necessary to the job. The special agent exam is divided into three sections: Part A, Part B, and Part C. Each part measures a different skill. Part A tests applicants verbal reasoning and will require applicants to read various paragraphs and then answer multiple choice questions based on the information they read. Part B measures quantitative reasoning and requires applicants to demonstrate basic arithmetic skills. Applicants may have to calculate dollar amounts or other basic mathematical problems based on information provided on the test. Part C of the special agent exam tests applicants investigative reasoning. In this section, applicants are provided information about a case and are asked to apply their investigative skills and demonstrate the ability to deduce information from the facts provided ATF Special Agent Applicant Assessment Test In addition to the written special agent exam, applicants will also participate in the ATF Special Agent Applicant Assessment Test. This exam is a psychological assessment that measures your personality and preference. The purpose of the assessment is to help determine candidates suitability for a career as an ATF agent. Pre-Employment Physical Task Test After successful completion of the examinations, youll need to demonstrate your physical abilities by participating in the ATF Special Agent Pre-Employment Physical Task Test. The physical task test consists of timed sit-ups  timed push-ups and a timed 1.5-mile run. Specific requirements vary by gender and age. To help you get an idea of where you need to be physically, heres what the ATF requires: 1-minute sit-ups - Men:Age 21-29: 40Age 30-39: 36Age 40 : 31 1-minute sit-ups - Women:Age 21-29: 35Age 30-39: 27Age 40 : 22 1-minute pushups - Men:Age 21-29: 33Age 30-39: 27Age 40 : 21 1-minute pushups - Women:Age 21-29: 16Age 30-39: 14Age 40 : 11 1.5-mile run - Men:Age 21-29: 12 minutesAge 30-39: 13 minutesAge 40 : 14 minutes 1.5-mile run - Women:Age 21-29: 16 minutesAge 30-39: 17 minutesAge 40 : 18 minutes If youre not in shape, you need to be in, start working now to get there. Be sure to check with your doctor before you begin any exercise regimen to make sure your body can handle it, and start working on building your strength and endurance. Youll want to work hard to make sure youre physically able to compete. Oral Interview Panel After the physical assessment, its not over yet. The next step is the oral interview panel, where your communications skills will be evaluated. In addition to the oral interview, a writing sample will also be required, so make sure your English skills are up to speed. Background Investigation Its not all about passing tests. Just because you have the mental and physical ability to do the job, you still need to demonstrate that you have the character necessary to adhere to the high ethical standards that come with the privilege of authority. To make sure of this, a thorough background investigation will be conducted, which will include employment verifications, a polygraph exam and a criminal and credit history check. Medical Testing The dangers of law enforcement careers are everywhere, and agents must be in good health to be able to perform and to survive. Because of this, a thorough medical exam is required. The exam will include a standard physical, and your blood pressure and heart will be checked. Youll also need to submit to a vision test and a hearing test. Your uncorrected vision must be 20/100 and corrected vision must be 20/20 in at least one eye and at least 20/30 in the other. Depth perception, peripheral vision and the ability to distinguish colors will also be tested. Finally, any hearing loss cannot be greater than 30 decibels. The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and ATF Academy If you can advance through the hiring process and receive a job offer, you still have a few more hurdles ahead. All newly hired agents - except for those hired from other federal investigative agencies - must attend a 12-week Criminal Investigators Training Program (CITP) at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Georgia. After completion of the CITP, agent trainees must then attend the ATF-specific Special Agent Basic Training. This 15-week program is extremely tough, both physically and mentally, and provides new agents with the knowledge and skills they will need carry out the mission of the ATF. Becoming an ATF Special Agent It takes hard work, dedication, and determination to become a special agent with the ATF. Between the lengthy and in-depth job application, the long hiring process, the grueling assessments and the difficult training program, only the best and most qualified candidates will find success in landing one of these exciting and rewarding jobs. If you have what it takes, though, the salary and benefits - not to mention the challenges and rewards of this important career - make it well worth the effort, and you may just find that working as an ATF special agent is the perfect criminology career for you.
